Exceptional circumstances for funerals outside the UK

In exceptional circumstances, you may be able to award Funeral Support Payment to a client who would not normally be eligible for a funeral outside the UK.

Examples of exceptional circumstances:

  • the funeral had to be held in another country due to the disruption of war
  • the body could not be returned to the UK because a volcanic eruption affected air travel

This list is not exhaustive. Under these circumstances, the funeral can be held anywhere in the world.

All other Funeral Support Payment eligibility rules must be met.
