carer and cared for person

Carer’s Allowance Supplement is an automatic payment made twice a year. It recognises the important contribution made by unpaid carers across Scotland.

The next payment of Carer’s Allowance Supplement will be made in June. It will be paid to people who are getting Carer’s Allowance from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) or Carer Support Payment from Social Security Scotland on 8 April 2024.

The second Carer’s Allowance Supplement payment will be made in December 2024 to people who are getting Carer’s Allowance from the DWP, or Carer Support Payment from Social Security Scotland, on 7 October 2024. The payment dates and amount will be confirmed later this year.

As part of the Scottish Budget, the Scottish Government has announced its intention for all social security payments to go up by 6.7% from April 2024. If the budget is approved by the Scottish Parliament, the payment will be £288.60.

People do not need to apply separately for Carer’s Allowance Supplement as it will be paid automatically to eligible carers. We will write to people in advance so they know when to expect a payment.

Some people who are eligible for Carer's Allowance from the DWP, or Carer Support Payment from Social Security Scotland do not get receive payments of these benefits because they get other benefits instead. This is sometimes called an 'underlying entitlement'. If people have an ‘underlying entitlement’ to Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment, they will not get Carer's Allowance Supplement, but they may be entitled to other benefits.

Carer Support Payment

Carer Support Payment is replacing Carer's Allowance for carers in Scotland.

Carers who get Carer Support Payment will also get Carer's Allowance Supplement. You do not need to apply for it.
