Date received: 23 June 2022
Date responded: 12 July 2022

Information requested

  • A list of the most commonly cited reasons for applications for the Scottish Child Payment to be refused.
  • The percentage of refusals following applications for the Scottish Child Payment where the decision to refuse has subsequently been overturned.

Response

The most commonly cited reasons for an application for Scottish Child Payment to be denied are:

  • Applicant is not in receipt of a qualifying benefit
  • Child on the application form is outside the claim window i.e. not under six
  • Unable to verify responsibility to the child
  • Applicant is not a resident of Scotland
  • Duplicate claim on another record

Information on Scottish Child Payment, including re-determinations received and the percentage of those allowed, is available on our Statistics Publications page.

The percentage of applications received between 15 February 2020 and 31 March 2022 that were not approved but were subsequently allowed or partially-allowed as a result of re-determination was 1.4%.

It should be noted that additional information may have been presented as part of the re-determination process. A successful re-determination does not imply that the original decision to not approve an application was in error.
