Upcoming carer grant pays over £280,000 since launch
Article Introduction…Over 1,000 young carers in Scotland have already qualified for a £300 payment, according to the latest Young Carer Grant statistics published today.
The grant is available to 16-18 year-olds who spend a weekly average of 16
hours caring for someone who receives a disability benefit.
The Scottish Government has increased the yearly payment amount to
£305.10 for eligible applicants from Wednesday 1 April this year, in line with
inflation, to further support eligible young people.
Cabinet Secretary for Social Security and Older People, Shirley-Anne
Somerville said:
"This is the first benefit of its kind anywhere in the UK. And I’m proud that we’ve been able to provide support which recognises those extraordinary young people in Scotland who help to look after a family member or friend.
Young carers often have more responsibilities and less free time than their peers. They may help out with household chores, assist with physical care needs or provide emotional support. This payment is for those young people to spend on whatever they would like.
During these unprecedented times, we are accepting applications from people who have recently turned 19 but were unable to apply at 18 due to coronavirus. We want to make sure COVID-19 doesn’t stop young carers accessing the support they deserve."
