Social Security Scotland is raising awareness of the financial help available to carers at school, college or university during National Student Money Week (3-7 March 2025)

There are three payments available for student carers who are providing emotional, mental or physical support to someone they know who gets a disability benefit.

Social Security Scotland has widened eligibility so that more unpaid carers in education can get financial support.

If you are looking after someone who gets a disability benefit for 35 hours a week or more, you might be able to get Carer Support Payment whilst you’re studying if you are

  • over 16 and studying part-time
  • over 20 and studying full-time
  • aged 16 to 19 and studying full-time on certain courses
