Social Security Scotland have launched new resources to help doctors and nurses support their terminally ill patients in accessing the benefits they need through this difficult period.

Clinicians can notify Social Security Scotland when a patient has been diagnosed as terminally ill by completing a Benefits Assessment Under Special Rules in Scotland (BASRiS) form.

Submitting a BASRiS form fast-tracks the application to ensure the patient gets rapid access to the maximum benefit payment they're entitled to.

To guide clinicians through the process, a new terminal illness resource page brings together all the guidance clinicians need in one place - including a webinar and flowchart. https://www.socialsecurity.gov.scot/terminal-illness-resources

If you or someone you know has a terminal illness, there is a fast-track application process for Social Security Scotland’s Disability Payments.
To go through the fast-track process, Social Security Scotland will need:

  • a shortened application form for Adult Disability Payment, Child Disability Payment or Pension Age Disability Payment

and

  • a BASRiS form submitted by a healthcare professional involved in your care or diagnosis
