The purpose of Our Charter is to set out what people should expect from the new social security system, which we will administer. It explains in clearer terms how we will uphold the Principles in the Act , how we will make sure that we are taking a human rights based approach to what we do and how we will demonstrate dignity, fairness and respect in all our actions.

Our key objective is to pay the right people the right money at the right time. Careful consideration has been given to minimising the risk of error occurring, and to identify and quickly resolve where error does occur.

The publication of this Code aims to ensure that, as well as meeting the legal requirements for an investigation, Social Security Scotland investigators follow best practice at all times. It is designed to give assurances about training and accountability of staff carrying out investigations and an overview of the requirements and guidelines that they must follow. It does not include detailed or comprehensive guidance on all investigation processes.
