We may be able to help pay the costs of a funeral in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. Check which countries are in the European Economic Area.
All other Funeral Support Payment eligibility rules must be met.
Clients that are eligible should be awarded the flat-rate payment.
If the client, or their partner, is an Irish citizen applying for a funeral in the EEA, they will need to provide evidence that they were resident in the UK on or before 31 Dec 2020. For example, an old bank statement with a UK address or a UK tenancy agreement. If this is difficult for the client, raise a case query with the Decision Support team.
As well as the flat-rate payment, we may be able to pay some burial/cremation/alkaline hydrolysis costs. You’ll need to complete a local authority cost comparison to decide how much to award. The cost comparison template is held in eRDM.
There may be situations where it’s not possible to complete a local authority cost comparison. For example, if the funeral outside the UK was a cremation but there’s no crematorium in the local authority area of the person who died. In these cases, you should award the actual costs if reasonable.
Please raise a case query with the Decision Support Team if you’re not sure what burial/cremation/alkaline hydrolysis costs can be paid.
We may be able to pay some client travel costs and some transportation of the body costs for a funeral outside the UK.
Raise a case query with the Decision Support Team if you’re not sure what costs you can award.
