Funeral Support Payment funeral documentation
In the application, the client will be asked if they are seeking costs related to:
- releasing assets – to do this the client will need to purchase an additional death certificate
- doctor’s certificates – cause of death certificate (this does not apply in Scotland)
Doctor's Certificates
There are no costs for these certificates if the death occurred in Scotland. If the death occurred outside of Scotland, the client adviser should check the costs declared are reasonable by visiting the relevant NHS website, or in the case of a death abroad, request to see a receipt.
Documentation to release deceased's assets
The client may request the cost of more than one death certificate.
Funeral Support Payment will only cover the costs for this if they are required to release funds from the deceased's estate. For example, to provide their bank with an order to release funds. There is no maximum limit to this cost, but client advisers should use the table below to check the costs declared are reasonable.
Standard costs apply in UK for this documentation
| Country | Cost |
|---|---|
|
Scotland |
£15 |
|
England & Wales |
£11 |
|
Northern Ireland |
£15 |
We will only pay for additional death certificates where there are assets and the client requires the documentation to release these assets to contribute towards the funeral costs.
Where a client requests costs for documentation to release deceased assets, we would expect to see a declaration of available funds.
