Part of Carer Support Payment decision making guide

Counting hours of study for those on non-advanced courses

Carers aged 16 to 19 who are studying for 21 hours or more in non-advanced education are not eligible for Carer Support Payment. Study hours are set by the educational establishment and are the minimum number of study hours required for the course. This is regardless of whether the study or work is done on or off educational premises.

In working out the 21 hours, study includes time spent:

  • receiving instruction or tuition

  • undertaking supervised study

  • in exams or doing practical work

  • taking part in any exercise, experiment or project, which is required for the course

The teacher, tutor or lecturer does not have to be present for it to count.

Work over and above the requirements of the course and meal breaks do not count towards hours of study.

Evidence from the place of education should be sought to determine hours of study. This is generally the minimum requirement in order to complete the course.

Other evidence such as a personal learning plan or course acceptance letter issued by the place of education can be considered, if this indicates the hours of study.
