Part of Carer Support Payment decision making guide

Death of a cared for person before Carer Support has came into force

Where the cared for person dies before the coming into force date for Carer Support (15 March 2026) the carer would remain on Carer Support Payment and the old 8 week bereavement run-on rule would apply from the award week following the date of death.

If reported before 15 March 2026

When the death of the cared for person is reported before 15 March 2026, the carer will not be transferred to Carer Support and remains on Carer Support Payment.

Carer Support Payment will continue for a period of 8 award weeks from the first Sunday after the week in which the cared for person died. (to note, the award week for Carer Support Payment runs from Sunday to Saturday).

The carer will not be entitled to Carer Support and therefore the  Scottish Carer Supplement or Carer Additional Person Payment components during this run-on period. However, they may get Carer's Allowance Supplement if the run-on includes the Carer's Allowance Supplement qualifying date of 13 April 2026.

If reported after 15 March 2026

When the death of the cared for person was before 15 March 2026 but reported after 15 March 2026 the carer’s Carer Support Payment award will have already been transferred to a Carer Support award. A determination without application would need to be made to end Carer Support and reinstate Carer Support Payment.

Once back in receipt of Carer Support Payment it will continue to be paid for a period of 8 weeks starting from the first Sunday after the week the cared for person died (to note, the award week for Carer Support Payment runs from Sunday to Saturday).During this 8-week run-on, the carer will not be entitled to Carer Support and therefore not get Scottish Carer Supplement or Carer Additional Person Payment. However, they may get Carer’s Allowance Supplement if the run-on includes the qualifying date of 13 April 2026.
