Payment of Carer Support after the death of the additional cared for person
If an additional cared for person dies, Carer Additional Person Payment will continue to be paid for either:
- 12 award weeks starting on the first day of the award week following the award week in which the additional cared for person died (to note, the award week for Carer Support runs from Sunday to Saturday), or
- Until the first Sunday following the award week in which the client ceases to satisfy the eligibility for Carer Support Payment requirement set out in regulation 14B(1)(a), whichever comes first
Carer Support Payment regs, reg. 16 (4A)
To ensure that the carer still receives the Carer Support Payment, Scottish Carer Supplement and any other Carer Additional Person Payments components of Carer Support after the death of an additional cared for person a determination without application of Carer Support is made determining their updated eligibility.
Example 1: run-on after the death of an additional cared for person
Freddy receives Carer Support. This includes the Carer Additional Person Payment component for caring for Vivian for 20 hours or more a week. Freddy also gets payments of the Carer Support Payment and Scottish Carer Supplement components for caring for Victoria.
Social Security Scotland is notified on Sunday 17 September that Vivian died on Thursday 05 September. The Bereavement client adviser inputs the date of death into SPM. A client adviser makes a determination that Vivian is no longer entitled to Adult Disability Payment from and including 06 September, the day after death.
Freddy continues to meet all other eligibility criteria for Carer Support and will continue to be paid Carer Support Payment and Scottish Carer Supplement. Freddy’s Carer Additional Person Payment will be paid for a period of 12 award weeks from the first Sunday after the week in which Vivian died. A Carer Support benefit week runs from a Sunday to Saturday. Therefore Carer Additional Person will be paid for the period between Sunday 07 September to Saturday 06 December.
Freddy continues to care for Victoria and continues to meet all other eligibility criteria for Carer Support and will therefore be paid the Carer Support Payment and Scottish Carer Supplement during and after the end of the Carer Additional Person Payment bereavement run-on.
Example 2: run-on after the death of an additional cared for person where circumstances
Hannah receives Carer Additional Person Payment for caring for George. Hannah also gets payments of the Carer Support Payment and Scottish Carer Supplement components for caring for Henry.
Social Security Scotland is notified on Monday 16 December that George died on Tuesday 08 December 2026. The Bereavement client adviser inputs the date of death into SPM. A client adviser makes a determination that George is no longer entitled to Adult Disability Payment from and including Wednesday 09 December, the day after her death.
Hannah continues to meet all other eligibility criteria and can be paid Carer Additional Person Payment for a period of 12 award weeks after the first day of the award week following the award week in which George died. A Carer Support benefit week runs from a Sunday to Saturday. The 12 week period would begin on Sunday 13 December 2026 and end on Saturday 06 March 2027.
On Tuesday 09 February 2027 Hannah lets Social Security Scotland know that she is no longer providing care to Henry. A determination is made that Hannah’s Carer Support award would end on Saturday 13 February 2027. Hannah’s Carer Additional Person Payment award will also end on that date, before the end of the bereavement run-on, as she no longer meets the eligibility criteria.
